Katelynn Christensen – C2 Editor

What do you view as the role of your office?
To find out what students want for the paper, and to communicate efficiently to my team and to the campus through the paper.

In terms of how I want to run the team, I see it as being largely administrative and organizational.  I want to take people who excel at their area of expertise, whether that means graphic design, writing, photographing, or copy editing to make a paper that is most efficient

What qualifies you to fulfill this role?
People tend to be comfortable talking to me, I am approachable, and I am genuinely interested in finding out what people want.  I want to give people the paper that they want.

I’m a PR Journalism major, I have written articles for the C2, and have worked together with the current C2 editor on the paper.  Also, through the process of preparing for this election, I’ve been talking with the current editor of the C2, and he is planning to hire me as the public relations director for this year’s Campus Chronicle.

What do you think an SA officer should be?
I think an SA officer is a representative of the students, and it’s their job to provide students with a campus experience that they’ll enjoy and be able to look back on fondly.

What do you plan to change from this year to next year?
I want to add multiple columns that will consistently show up in every issue.  To figure out what people want to read, I’m going to have surveys asking people which subjects they would like to have regularly in a column, and ask them for suggestions.  By doing this, I hope to cater to specific demographics by adding variety so there ends up being something in the paper for everyone.  I also want to change the writing style of the paper to be more journalistic and want to bring back “Back Talk.” For those who don’t know what that is, it’s a page on the back of the paper where people are asked random questions, have their photos taken, and we print their photo with their random answers.

Also, I want to create program called C3, or “C cubed” (Campus Chronicle Club), that will be a workshop for staff writers and anyone else who wants to join to learn technical journalistic skills, share their ideas, and brainstorm.

I also hope to get more people involved with the paper.  One of the ideas I have is to have a photo contest, and when people send in photos that end up getting published, they’ll receive a gift certificate for a Giugni’s sandwich.  Another similar idea I have to increase participation is to automatically enter people into a sweepstakes when they participate in surveys.

What about the website?
At the moment, I’m not sure.  I like the idea of having a website, but I don’t know if that’s something I want to focus on right now.  It’s something that we’ll have to test the waters with.  If it fits what we do, we’ll use it.  The person I’m planning to have as my graphic design artist also has an emphasis on web design, so if we want to continue the website, we can.

Design changes?
I’ll leave that up to the students.  I want to ask students whether they’d rather have a magazine format or a traditional newspaper style.

I’ll probably keep the “C2” idea, but maybe change the logo by writing “Campus Chronicle” in smaller print.

The layout will probably be different from the current paper by being more consistent, since consistent columns will require a consistent format.

Also, instead of focusing on a different theme for every issue, I plan to have different feature articles that emphasize important social issues with some elements of consistency, but not an overarching theme.
